Why we built Halcyon
We built Halcyon to create a safe space for doctors and patients, where doctors can truly care for their patients, without the interference that comes with traditional, insurance-based primary care.
Halcyon is a family business started in 2016 by a husband-and-wife team of physicians: Emilie, a family doctor, and James, who trained in emergency medicine and now practices primary care. It grew out of our years inside that system, and the kind of care we always wished we could give.
At Halcyon, we believe the key to good health is a trusted, long-term relationship with your primary care doctor. That’s hard to build in the traditional system, where doctors are asked to carry patient panels so large that meaningful, lasting relationships become almost impossible.
With this model, patients get care that makes sense and fits into their lives, and doctors get to practice medicine the way they imagined when they chose primary care in the first place.
After over a decade of care, we’re more committed than ever to bringing Halcyon’s direct primary care to the community. We’re incredibly grateful for the chance to care for our beautiful Orange County community and beyond, and we look forward to another great decade of care.

Why “Halcyon”?
The word Halcyon carries several meanings, and each one captures something we stand for.
In Greek mythology, the halcyon bird was known for calming the winter storms at sea. That’s the image in our logo, the bird settling the ocean, because we want to be a place of safety and calm within the chaos of the current healthcare system.
“Halcyon days” are the good old days, an idyllic, peaceful time when you could see your own family doctor and know they’d have time for you. Our practice brings back that same old-fashioned connection to a personal family doctor who knows you.
Halcyon birds are kingfishers, so you’ll spot them throughout our office.
